An interview with Sara!

We are priviledged to be able to welcome Sara to our team of volunteers! Below she has answered some of the most common questions we receive about volunteering for us:

Why did you decide to start volunteering for Leeds Faith in Schools?

I am hoping to work with young people and children in the future. Leeds Faith in Schools seemed like a great charity , an opportunity to bring my faith into local High Schools but not through forcing it upon people, rather letting young people decide for themselves. Teaching lessons on how we can have healthy relalationships are so useful for our young people today, we never had anything like that when I was at school!

Would you encourage others to volunteer for Leeds Faith in Schools?

Yes, definitely! The whole team are so friendly and welcoming. I am never pushed into doing anything I'm not yet comfortable with but I feel challenged to step out of my comfort zone which has been brilliant. I'm having so much fun through my volunteering so far because every lesson I help with is completely different. There is just so much variety in the work that Leeds Faith in Schools does across the city. Volunteering is really flexible, I am able to give as much or as little time as I like which is perfect while I'm studying at University. Plus I feel that volunteering with Leeds Faith in Schools has enabled me to escape from the 'student bubble' and experience more of Leeds beyond just my University campus.

What has been your favourite aspect of volunteering so far?

It has to be helping with lessons on healthy relationships and hearing the different views and opinions of the young people. I love just having the time to be able to talk and interact with them, to actually take the time to listen to what they have to say. I have also loved helping with the Easter lessons at Leeds City Academy, particularly with those pupils who don't speak English as their first language. It's been amazing to experiment with them using art work to explain the Christian perspective of the Easter story.

What is one piece of advice you would give to a new Leeds Faith in Schools Volunteer?

Go into it with an open mind! Be flexible. Go with the flow and enjoy it!
